An attack was staged on the US embassy building at 03.30 am by anarchist group Rouvikonas, using paint.

A group of people who rode on motorcycles threw paint at the entrance of the embassy's parking area at the juction of Doryleou and Macedonias streets. The paint was carried in balloons and bottles, and the group caused only damage to the wall, before leaving.

Immediately there was a police mobilization, and the police made eight detentions in the area. The accused were led to Attica security, where they were dealt with.

Approximately half an hour later, on 04.05, a text signed by Ruvikonas was posted, in which the group took responsibility for the action.

The text begins with the report that the attack took place on Sunday, January 6 at 03.30 - that is, 24 hours earlier - which, according to police officers, indicates that the action had been planned and for some reason it was carried out today.

The anouncement refered to American imperialism, and in particular to the role of the United States through the International Monetary Fund, in the situation in Syria, while linking the US to the political situation in Greece.

A State Security Prosecution examining the eight individuals is being conducted for the attack by the anarchist group "Rouvikonas" with paint at the US Embassy in Athens.

As became known by police sources, the place where members of "Rouvikonas" chose to throw the bottles with the paint, is on the side of the embassy building, at the entrance to the parking lot at the junction of Doryleou and Makedonias streets, which is guarded by the security of the embassy.

The offenders, about 10 people with motorcycles, threw almost at the same time they threw the paint, threw smoke grenades to prevent the cameras from recording them, but also to create confusion and allow their escape.

Eventually, after the attack, the perpetrators moved towards Lycabettus but were immediately pursued by Security and Immediate Action police forces, as the operations center was alerted by police checkpoints at other locations around the embassy.

This morning, police will proceed with the procedures required to receive - from embassy security - the material from the cameras to be included in the case file.
