Huge gas deposit found in Cyprus EEZ
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The discovery of a "huge" gas field in plot 10 of Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus is expected to be announced next week by US firm ExxonMobil.
This was reported by a high-ranking source in Cyprus, speaking to the Italian agency Agenzia Nova, on the sidelines of the EGYPS 2019 conference held in Cairo.
The same official compared ExxonMobil's discovery with the largest natural gas deposit discovered so far in the eastern Mediterranean, the Egyptian Zor deposit, noting that "it's not as big as Zor but has a similar basin."
It is noted that the Egyptian Zor deposit has a capacity of 850 billion cubic meters of natural gas and was the cause of the interest of the largest oil companies for drilling in the EEZ of Cyprus and, more broadly, in the eastern Mediterranean.
During the intense mobility of hydrocarbon research in the Cypriot EEZ, Ankara is "responding" with a demonstration of military power, as the Turkish Navy is preparing to carry out the greatest exercise in its history.
