"This visit confirmed the great momentum of Greek-Chinese relations, the priority given by both countries to the development of strategic cooperation between us, the common interests that exist between the new economic model we want to build aiming to make Greece a bridge between Asia, Europe and Africa and the Silk Road Strategy," Katrougalos said.

The foreign minister described the contacts with his counterpart, other leaders and the Communist Party of China as "very important."

"China has accomplished many things. It is about to become the world's largest economy. It has taken 700 million of its citizens out of absolute poverty," he added.

Yang Jiechi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, on Monday met with Greek Foreign Minister George Katrougalos in Beijing.

Yang, also director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, expressed his hope that the two countries will maintain high-level exchanges, consolidate political mutual trust, strengthen strategic alignment and expand cooperation within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Stressing the importance of safeguarding multilateralism and international rules based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, Yang called on the two sides to intensify coordination on international affairs, promote the comprehensive strategic partnership of the two countries and advance the development of the China-Europe relationship.

Earlier on Monday, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi also met with Katrougalos.

Foreign Minister George Katrougalos attended the official opening of the National People's Congress during his visit to Beijing.
