Greek authorities on alert for juhadists crossing from Turkey

Featured Greek authorities on alert for juhadists crossing from Turkey

An alarm has been sounded by the Counter-Terrorism and Intelligence Agenies about the possibility of jihadists in refugee camps in the Aegean islands, but also of the danger of former ISIS fighters attempting to cross to Europe through Turkey and Greece.

Elevated levels of alert are said to be have rung for EYP, Counter-Terrorism and related services, according to a report, as fears that detained jihadists in Kurdish-controlled prisons in Syria may attempt to return to Europe.

The US envoy for Syria had announced that of the 7,000 jihadists detained by Kurds in Syria, 1,000 are European citizens who had traveled to the country to join ISIS. The Greek authorities are indeed "concerned about the repatriation of so-called foreign fighters", as an unnamed Greek official told Kathimerini. He added that the competent authorities have the data and are monitoring which European jihadists remain in detention and which have escaped and may try to return to Europe.

As part of the increased scrutiny, Europol officials specializing in counterterrorism are expected to be in Evros as of November 1st to conduct jihadist searches on European Police bases, according to the same report.

Finally, the Aliens Branch of Greek police ELAS. updated the "risk indicators" used in the reception and identification of foreigners arriving in the country, according to a police source citing the same newspaper.

Concern for jihadists in Samos as well

At the same time, authorities have raised concerns about the existence of jihadists in Samos, while the island is on the verge of serious incidents among migrants last week and a fire at the Reception and Identification Center (KYT).

After the events, a large number of refugees and migrants refused to return to the camp and stayed in a public place in the center of Samos town. They said the cause was not problems in the camp, but threats from a small group of people who appear as followers of ISIS, according to a report in Real News.
