Extra police to protect Evros border

Featured Extra police to protect Evros border

The borders are being reinforced. With 400 police officers in the first phase being sent to Evros, and a total of 1,060 more personnel in a second phase in Evros and the islands, Greek borders are being strengthened in the wake of Turkish threats to relocate migrants from the Turkish side of Evros, as well as information and images of migrants accumulating on Turkish shores.

At the same time, the construction of the new fence, 26 km long in Evros, is proceeding along a fast track, under rapid procedures. It is noted that the technical study for the construction of the new fence is expected, in order to initiate the procedures for the assignment of the contractor of the project, which will be completed in the near future.

In this phase and until Friday, May 29, by order of the ELAS (Hellenic Police) Headquarters issued on Tuesday, a total of 400 police officers will have been deployed along the entire Evros border line to strengthen security.

These are mainly MAT riot police officers from Northern Greece and Thessaly, but also two squads from Athens, as well as from other services from various areas.

At the same time, the procedures for the recruitment of new border guards who have already been accepted under the recent competition, but have not yet been hired, are accelerating, as the issue of the coronavirus had caused all the procedures to have been "frozen". Now, however, the completion of the procedures and the fast-paced training of those acceptedwill be done quickly. These are 400 border guards for Evros and another 660 for the islands of the North Aegean.

Finally, it is worth noting that this year the number of those admitted with the Panhellenic exams to the Greek Police is significantly increasing, in order to increase the personnel of the Corps.

Specifically, 730 people will be admitted to the Police Academy and 70 to the Officers School, a total of 800 people, compared to 310 and 40 respectively last year.

It should be noted that there are already 100 Frontex personnel deployed along the Evros border who are scheduled to leave on July 6, but there will be a request for them to stay and, according to competent sources, they will stay all summer.
