Half of all apartment dwellers heatless

A research by the Natural Gas Supply Company shows that until now, fewer Athenians living in apartment buildings have bought heating gas this winter, compared to the previous one. About half of them (44%) have not yet filled their fuel tanks with heating oil. Last year the figure was at 33%.
Almost 250,000 apartments in Athens are struggling with heating prices and the Environment ministry is working on a change in the existing law, making it easier for flat tenants to become heating independent.
The Natural Gas Supply Company is investing in heat autonomy for apartments and has 7 million euros reserved to subsidy it with 1200 euros for each apartment. That amounts to half the cost of installation for gas autonomy for hot water, cooking and heating.
They point out that natural gas use is cheaper than oil use by 11% for home users. The company strongly supports the ministry's intention to vote a new law making it simple for apartment tenants to get heating independent.
