Turkish foreign min.: Greek "islands and islets belong to us"
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The policy of provocations is continued by Turkish officials. Mevlut Cavusoglu chose to add fuel to the fire after the formation of the great victory of New Democracy in the elections.
The head of Turkish diplomacy said that some islands and islets in the Aegean belong to Turkey, despite the fact that Greece says they are its own, while pointing out that there will be tensions between the two countries if all the problems are not resolved.
"There is the issue of maritime areas of responsibility"
As SKAI correspondent Manolis Kostidis reported from Istanbul, Mevlut Cavusoglu raised the issue of questioning the sovereignty of the islands in his interview with Haber Turk last night.
"There is the issue of maritime areas of responsibility. It is considered easy to solve the issue of islands and islets whose sovereignty has not been determined. We say they belong to us, the Greeks say they belong to them," said the Turkish politician.
"Ridiculous, but also illegal"
And he continued unmoved: "They claim 10 miles (airspace) over 6 miles. There is the status of demilitarized islands. Claiming 10 miles of airspace over 6 miles of territorial waters is both ridiculous and illegal under international law. Let's say this is the simplest."
"The question is whether the other side will take any step in these matters. Mitsotakis stated that "we are not discussing any other issue except the maritime areas of responsibility". And we say that if we only talk about one issue, as long as there are other issues, we will continue to have tensions", Mevlut Cavusoglu concluded.
