Police officers arrested in NE Greece on charges of aiding migrant smugglers

Five border guards were arrested on Monday in northeast Greece, while another eight were detained, following a police internal affairs investigation into migrant smuggling.
According to reports, two Syrian nationals arrested in the northern port city of Kavala on charges of smuggling illegal migrants into Greece provided information into the alleged complicity of the law enforcement officers.
The border guards under investigation all serve at a department in the town of Didymoticho, which is located close to the land border with Turkey.
Border guards are part of the national police force (EL.AS) in Greece, and not affiliated with the military.
