The City of Athens Christmas Tree lighting ceremony was held at Syntagma Square on Thursday evening by outgoing Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyiannis.
In a musical backdrop provided by the Athens Big Band, the 17-metre-high Christmas tree, which was transported from the town of Karpenissi, was illuminated by 24,000 small lights and is decorated by hundreds of balls and other ornaments.
More than 83km of Christmas lights have been put up on trees and columns in the city, while more than 3,800 aerial and arched light decorations are setting the tone of the festive season across downtown Athens.
The full program of festive events by the Athens municipality will be announced in coming days.
