A bulldozer operator, accidentally uncovered a significant archeological site in aplot in a residential area of Agios Syllas, on the western edge of the city of Lemesos, on Cyprus.
According to a first assessment of the Cyprus Acheological Bureau, the ancient burial site that was discovered is dated to the Hellenistic period, around 300 BC and contain human remains, amphorae, and other wares. One of the graves uncovered contained seven skeletons.
As became known the bulldozer's trenching tool accidentally hit the ceiling of a cave, while digging, which collapsed revealing the tombs.
The area was hitherto unknown for ancient remains. Archeologists will now record and excavate the site and move the contents of graves for further study.
