Greece, Egypt, Cyprus agree to delineate EEZs

The acceleration of the negotiations between Greece and Cyprus and Egypt on the delimitation of the EEZ was decided between the leaders of the three countries during the current tripartite summit in Cairo.

Specifically, the press release states: "The three countries emphasize the universal applicability of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and we decide to go as soon as possible on negotiations on the delimitation of maritime areas where this has not yet been done." The press release also includes reference to the need to respect sovereignty and calls on Turkey to stop all ongoing seismographic surveys within the maritime area of Cyprus and avoid similar activities in the future. It also makes reference to a fairly comprehensive and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem in accordance with international law.

In their joint statement the three leaders mentioned the Cyprus issue and the need for a fair solution on the basis of international law and UN resolutions and called on Turkey to stop challenges in the EEZ of Cyprus.

During the joint statement after the summit, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said it was a meeting that the “three” owed history.
