Brussels terror attacks, several dead and many injured

Two explosions were heard at Brussels airport early on Tuesday morning and Belgian media said several people were injured. Belgian media note that at least 11 persons have been killed. Images of broken windows and several injured people have been released.

The Brussels metro entire system and all transportation means are shutting down following a blast at Maelbeek station, close to the city’s EU institutions.  The EU offices are evacuated.

Belgium has raised its terror threat to the highest level.
That takes the level for the entire country up from level three to four. The police advise people to stay at home.

Sky News in London said the blasts had occurred in the departures lounge and cited reports it had occurred near the American Airlines desk. The explosions occurred around 8 a.m. local time.

Belgian media said rail traffic to the airport was suspended. The airport is being evacuated and police warn people not to approach the airport.

The developments comes just days after a suspect in the Nov. 13 attacks in Paris which killed 130 people was apprehended in Brussels.

Brussels citizens also endured several tense days of enhanced security involving transportation and school closings in November in the wake of those Paris attacks.
