Marcie Mayer: Harvesting acorns on Kea
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Environmental activist and entrepreneur Marcie Mayer, is the heart and soul of the Hamada Acorn Initiative, a project that aims to restore acorn as an important product for the local economy of Kea.
She crowdsourced the initial funding for her Eating Acorns project on Kickstarter, where the campaign made its funding goal only within few days, and this year 40 families participated in the first large scale harvest of acorn caps since 1965.
Marcie Mayer argues that it's in our hands to have planned, balanced and sustainable uses for land. She suggests that we should see crisis as an opportunity for positive change. All we need is planning, adaptability, acceptance and to search for the lesson, in each experience. These are the keys to face any setback.
Kostis Maroulis and Marcie Mayer have spent ten years building the Red Tractor Farm and new ideas and innovations at the farm continue to flow.
Kostis makes red wine from ancient grape varietals and produces marmalades and condiments in small batches from RTF certified organic vegetables. He plays bouzouki and is a creative cook.
Marcie began the Acorn Initiative for Kea and runs a small professional acorn cookie kitchen on the farm. She is passionate about loom weaving and Hatha yoga and regularly offers both at the farm.
Both Marcie and Kostis are avid sea swimmers as well as hikers and can tell you on a daily basis where the best walk and swim will be according to wind and wave conditions.
