President Papoulias Addresses Democracy Exhibition

  • Written by

Greek President Karolos Papoulias stated during a Parliamentary exhibit on democracy's commencement, "Today is a day of remembrance and great respect to those who fought, were imprisoned, were exiled so as to restore democracy in Greece. Today we honour all of them and is a shining example for all of us, that in times of crisis the flame of freedom and democratic institutions must prevail", as reported by ANA-MPA.

President Papoulias added, "I want to thank everyone who worked on this exhibition. An excellent exhibition".  The exhibition opened yesterday, marking the 40th anniversary of democracy's restoration in Greece.  It was created by the Library of the Parliament and the Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy, while special committees supervised it.

Many of the nation's leader attended its launch including Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos, SYRIZA chief Alexis Tsipras, DIMAR leader Fotis Kouvelis and KKE's Secretary General.

Parliamentary President Evangelos Meimarakis described the event's mission in his opening address, "The organization of this exhibition was not a random choice for an anniversary event, but aims to honour in the best possible way ... the protagonists of that period and especially the Greek people who actively participated in the effort to overthrow the dictatorship and embraced the effort for the full restoration of the Democracy". Meimarakis added, "The Greeks proved that when they are united, they can face difficulties".
