Boston Marathon Maintains Tightened Security

  • Written by

The 118th Annual Boston Marathon kicked off today, with heavy security due to last year's horrific bombing incidents, that left three dead and over 260 injured.

Today's race started at 8:50 a.m. for mobility-challenged runners and at 9:32 for elite females. Elite men racers began at 10:00 a.m.

"American the Beautiful" was played prior to the race, and a moment of silence was held to honor the victims of 2013. Marathon organizers and the state of Massachusetts tried to preserve a historic family feel, along with tightened security. Approximately 36,000 runners are participating in today's 2014 Marathon.

Runner Katie O'Donnell commented, "I can't imagine the number of emotions that are going to be there...I think I'm going to start crying at the starting line and I'm not sure I'll stop until I cross the finish line".
Boston rooftops were manned and local and state police officials lined the streets. Bomb sniffing canines were present and helicopters covered the Marathon's airspace.

The NYPD bomb squad also worked the 26.2 mile race. Over 100 cameras were implemented along the running route. Participants are required to use clear plastic to hold belongings, and observers are asked to leave backpacks and strollers away from the sidelines.
