UNFICYP Appoints New Commander Kristin Lund

The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) is now being led by Norwegian Major General Kristin Lund, marking the first time in history that a female had commanded a UN peacekeeping force.

A UNFICYP press release stated, "Major General Lund succeeds Major General Chao Liu of China who served as UNFICYP Force Commander from February 2011 to August 2014".

During a ceremony held in Nicosia's United Nations Protected Area, UN Secretary General's Special Representative in Cyprus Lisa Buttenhiem, "thanked Major General Liu for his three and a half years of service with UNFICYP and paid tribute to his dedication, professionalism and leadership which greatly contributed to United Nations efforts on the island", as reported by Parikiaki.

The UN press release further stated of Lund, "has had a distinguished career, with more than 34 years of military command and staff experience at the national and international levels".

It described Lund's prior UN work, "service with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR) in Bosnia".

The UN statement adds that she has "extensive experience in multinational operations, including deployment to Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm in 1991 and with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's SFOR in the Balkans and ISAF Headquarters in Afghanistan".
