NYC Faces Growing Terrorist Fears

  • Written by

New York City faces concerns regarding a terrorist attack, due to the forthcoming radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri's terror trial, as stated by a NYPD high official.

Commissioner of Intelligence John Miller stated to WCBS 880 that there are no new intelligence findings, but that the NYPD will remain on high alert.

The radical cleric's trial is set to begin on April 14th, which coincides with the beginning of Passover. Al-Masri is the third terror suspect to face the Manhattan judicial system and is being charged in the 1998 Yemen tourist attack, that claimed four lives. He is also thought to have created a terrorist training camp in Oregon.

NYPD Director of Intelligence Analysis Rebecca Weiner stated to the Daily News that her sector is: "attuned to the possibility that his upcoming trial may inspire more (terror). It is a major priority for us in the next couple of weeks". The Police Department is collaborating with the federal government, to protect the federal courthouse and neighboring areas of Manhattan. Local businesses are being advised to report any suspicious activity.
