Members of the U.S. House of Representatives are asking Secretary of State Marco Rubio to clarify whether public statements made by the U.S. ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack, reflect the official position of the American government.
Turkey expressed its dissatisfaction on Thursday morning over the discussions and announcements made a few days ago in Athens between Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Emmanuel Macron during the French president’s visit. In a statement, the Turkish Ministry of Defense referred to remarks by European leaders that “target Ankara,” adding that such statements are not in line with the principles of alliance and solidarity.
"The Muslim Minority of Thrace is a religious minority. The Treaty of Lausanne of 1923, which governs its legal status, does not allow for multiple interpretations, and its religious-not its ethnic-character is indisputable," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized on Thursday in its response to the Turkish Foreign Ministry regarding the Muslim minority of Thrace.
