The President of the Hellenic Republic, Prokopis Pavlopoulos during his speech  on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance of the Genocide of Pontus Hellenism (19 May) urged Greeks and the world to keep the memory alive.

On 19 May, Hellenism commemorates the extermination of 353,000 Pontian Greeks killed during a genocide. In 1994, the Greek parliament selected 19 May as the day to commemorate the Pontian Greek Genocide by the Turks. It was on that day that Mustafa Kemal landed at Sampsounta, essentially initiating the gigantic pogrom.
