A wildfire erupted just after 5 p.m. (15.00 GMT), on Tuedsday, at the Drafi site along the slopes of Mt. Penteli, which overlooks Athens from the north. The specific site has been scorched by summer wildfires on more than one occasion in the past.

A major fire-fighting force has been dispatched, including 16 water-dropping aircraft, and nearly 100 fire-fighters. The latter include a 28-man contingent from Romania.

Several high-end municipalities are located below or around the specific site.

Evecuations

Residents in the area of Drafi, at the foothills of Mt. Penteli, were instructed to evacuate towards the area of Pallini, early on Tuesday evening.

The text alert messages were sent out via the emergency number 112.

Meanwhile, strong firefighting forces operated against the fire, that first broke out at the area of Daou in Penteli, and burned its way towards Drafi, noted the fire brigade.

Some 78 firefighters with 22 fire engines, 5 ground teams, alongside 28 Romanian firefighters with 3 water tanks, are assisted by 11 water-bombers and 5 helicopters in this broad operation.

Residents in the areas of Penteli and Nea Penteli, Daou, Dioni and Kallitechnioupoli have all received a text alert by the emergency number 112, warning them to be on stand-by for any further instructions by the civil protection and the fire brigade.

Traffic on the following roads has been closed off by the police:

– Nea Penteli to Nea Makri orbital road, from 414 SNEN military hospital to Agios Petros

– Kalission Road and Papadiamanti towards Drafi

– Doukissis Plakentias and Filonos roads towards Drafi

– Anapafseos and Klisthenous roads towards Penteli
