Troika vs Government over Budget Shortfall

The troika is expected to put more pressure on the government to find an additional 2 billion euros in cuts after a look at the the draft 2014 budget.
According to press reports the gap amounts to only half a billion euros and can be covered through cracking down on businesses that have failed to pay social security contributions.
The government through spokesman Simos Kedikoglou insists that no new cuts can be made, ahead of tough negotiations with troika inspectors.
"We have used up all the fat in the economy. So there is no room at all for more cross-the-board cuts, there is no reason for them and no rational explanation for them," Simos Kedikoglou said.
However, finance minister Yannis Stournaras has said that a decision on how the gap will be covered in 2014 would be taken in December.
