19 May: Remembering the Pontian Genocide

On 19 May, Hellenism commemorates the extermination of 353,000 Pontian Greeks killed during a genocide. In 1994, the Greek parliament selected 19 May as the day to commemorate the Pontian Greek Genocide by the Turks. It was on that day that Mustafa Kemal landed at Sampsounta, essentially initiating the gigantic pogrom.
