The Thessaloniki Port Authority (OLTh S.A.) and the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) have signed a cooperation pact, both sides announced this week, one aimed at boosting international trade and their respective commercial activities through the promotion of Eurasia sea transport via the northern Greece port and the supremely important Egyptian passageway.
The state-run rail network infrastructure manager, OSE, will reportedly approve work to upgrade the current rail line connecting the Thessaloniki Port Authority, with a new line expected to be constructed, but in a matter of years and not months.
Transforming Thessaloniki port into a gateway to the Balkans is the main priority of a consortium of three companies – Deutsche Invest Equity Partners GmbH, Belterra Investments Ltd (controlled by Ivan Savvidis, owner of Greek football team PAOK) and CMA CGM’s Terminal Link – which have stepped in as the port’s new managers.
