Kyriakos Mitsotakis made a post on Facebook regarding the dark anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. In it, the Prime Minister emphasizes that the slogan “We Do Not Forget” remains relevant and adds that “the just solution to the Cyprus issue is demanded by international legality and the civilization of the 21st century.”
In detail, Mr. Mitsotakis stated:
“The dark anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus rekindles once again the memory of raw violence, loss, and uprooting. However, it also strengthens the struggle for the reunification of the island within the framework of a modern European state. Without occupying forces. And ready to serve as a beacon of stability and peace in the turbulent seas of the Eastern Mediterranean.
The just solution to the Cyprus issue is demanded by international legality and the civilization of the 21st century. It is also imposed by the current circumstances, especially in such a troubled region. That is why intercommunal talks must gain momentum on the path of the UN Security Council’s decisions. A path consistently followed in full cooperation by Athens and Nicosia.
The slogan ‘We Do Not Forget,’ after all, remains relevant. In Cyprus, with the continuous and methodical effort to restore its sovereign rights. And in Greece, with the ongoing strengthening of its defensive and diplomatic power. The struggle for justice is shared. And it will be victorious. As Europe, the peoples of the world, and History itself demand.”
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan traveled to the Occupied Territories on the occasion of the 51st anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, according to the statement by the Director of Communications of the Presidency, Burhanettin Duran.
