Arrested jihadist had Greek residence permit

A jihadist arrested in Belgium on charges of participating in jihadist militant units in Syria and Iraq, had not just passed through Greece, but had also obtained a legal residence permit here.

The 25 year old Syrian citizen traveled from Greece for Sweden, but was held at his lay-over stop at Charleroi airport in Brussels for having a forged passport, but was found to be suspect for terrorism and was arrested.

The jihadist had a six month residence permit in Greece, and stayed for two months in Athens in the area of Acharnon, and had not tendered an application for asylum.

The Syrian had entered Greece from Turkey, landing at Rhodes, along with other immigrants in June 2014. He is believed to have links with the Al Nusrah front, Al Qaeda's branch in Syria.
