Stalled talks on Cyprus are Eroglu's fault

Turkish Cyptiot leader Dervis Eroglu should have made efforts to convince Ankara to “change its hard line on the EEZ issue,” said Kudret Ozersay, the former Turkish Cypriot negotiator fired by Mr Eroglu.

According to Mr Ozersay, the Turkish Cypriot side followed an erroneous stratgey on the Exclusive Economic Zone issue. In statements made to the Turkish Cypriot press, he maintained that Cyprus president Nikos Anastasiadis was “searching for a pretext to withdraw from negotiations.” Mr Ozersay is implying that the involvement of Turkey in the new crisis is a mistake, which is borne by the Turkish Cypriot side.

In this way, as he says, the international community is getting the message that “Turkey is violating the sovereign rights of the republic of Cyprus.” According to Mr Ozersay's view this is a great weakness of Turkish Cypriot diplomacy. As he says in the EEZ issue there is “discord between the two communities, and not confrontation between turkey and Cyprus.”
