Cyprus coalition teeters as allies demand probe into ‘secret video’ scandal

The crisis intensified following reports by the daily newspaper Politis that the compromising footage originated from a Dec. 9 video call while Mr. Christodoulides was traveling abroad. Political instability has deepened amid fears that the leakers possess a second, undisclosed recording.

While coalition partners DIKO and EDEK have not yet withdrawn support, EDEK’s leadership issued a strict ultimatum for remaining in the government.

The party is demanding the appointment of independent criminal investigators, the immediate abolition of a controversial discretionary “Fund,” and the full disclosure of its donors.

Mr. Christodoulides stated he is prepared to release financial data but only “within the limits of the law,” pushing back against calls for unchecked disclosure.

“I will not act illegally,” he told reporters.

Scrutiny of the specific “Fund” mentioned in the tapes has revealed significant cash reserves. Politis reported that the entity held 2.64 million euros ($2.75 million) in liquidity by the end of 2024, having recorded 2.18 million euros in donation income that year alone.

With trust eroding and opposition parties calling for accountability, the scandal represents the most severe challenge to Mr. Christodoulides’ presidency since taking office.
