Maria Karystianou: Public face of Tempi disaster victims seeking entry to politics baffles supporters with siding against abortion rights

Pandora’s box was opened by Maria Karystianou’s remarks yesterday, as her response to a question about abortions on the television station Open provoked both negative and positive reactions from the political world, as well as within the ranks of the victims’ relatives. Ms Karystianou has ridden the crest of a wave of popularity based on her becoming the face of the families of vitims of the Tempi train disaster, and has embarged on a political career with an aim at taking part in the 2027 elections.

Greeks want to save for retirement, but most can’t afford to

Most Greeks would like to secure a comfortable retirement. Yet for many, saving toward that goal remains out of reach. According to a pan-European public opinion survey on retirement savings conducted by Insurance Europe, nearly six in 10 Greeks do not save for retirement — a significantly higher share than the European Union average. The findings highlight a striking contradiction: strong expectations of future pension income coexist with limited personal savings and low confidence about life after work.
