The idea of a private doctor in Xanthi, cardiologist Komnenos Gambras, combined with the expertise of his friend, Anestis Papachristou, a self-taught computer engineer, led to the creation of a voluntary group of seven people to make plastic masks using a 3D printer to help medical and nursing staff at the city's hospital.
