Greek authorities are investigating the causes that led to the devastating fires which destroyed vast swaths of forests on the island of Evia, and according to initial sources, there are indications of foul play pointing to intentional arson.

The European Union Civil Protection Mechanism will send air assistance to fight a fire in central Evia that rages out of control and has led to the evacuation of four villages, the Civil Protection Secretary General said on Tuesday.

As the fire fronts in Evia continued to rage overnight, the aim of the firefighters and helicopters, among which is one of the two Italian aircraft that has already arrived in Greece – the second one expected after 11:30 am, is to limit the catastrophic fire with its huge 11km front to Central Evia.
