An agreement on maritime boundaries in the Mediterranean Sea signed by Turkey and the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) in Libya is "unproductive" and "provocative," a US State Department spokesperson commented, adding that Ankara’s claims are contrary to international law, which stipulates that islands have the same rights as mainland regions to an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and continental shelf.

Nearly 50,000 migrants and refugees arrived at the islands of the northern Aegean in 2019, according to figures released by authorities on Thursday. According to these, a total of 27,148 migrants and refugees arrived on the island of Lesvos, another 8,076 persons arrived on Chios and 10,802 on Samos over the year. The number of arrivals on Lesvos was nearly double that in 2018 (14,906).

The Greek Finance Ministry submitted a bill on Friday to parliament which included a clause allowing the concession of small islands and isles to private citizens for the purpose of business exploitation without the approval of the Hellenic Navy General Staff.
