Authoritarian Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday again threatened to “open borders” with Greece for would-be migrants seeking to reach central and western Europe via the latter, essentially a repeat of a failed March 2020 operation to breach the land borders between the two countries at the Evros River and generate a new “migration crisis” for Europe.

Defense Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos called for the strengthening of NATO's presence in the Aegean Sea on Thursday so as to halt, as he said, the migration influx from Turkey, speaking at the two-day meeting of NATO Defense Ministers in Brussels, February 12-13.

Greek initiative to control migration flows

A Greek initiative to boost the return of migrants from Europe to their countries of origin was tabled Monday, by Deputy Minister of Citizen Protection George Koumoutsakos at the Justice and Home Affairs Council in Brussels.
