Greece and Spain are lagging behind their competitors in the Mediterranean in terms of how quickly in 2021 they are filling the "tourist gap" created by the pandemic compared to 2019.

"The epidemiological burden in Greece remains at high levels and the next period will be extremely crucial for the evolution of the pandemic," government spokesperson Yiannis Economou said on Monday during a press briefing.

The rapid spread of the coronavirus in Greece - and especially on the islands - during the summer has proven a "migraine", at a time when people are preparing for the big holiday season of August and while the cases of the Delta mutation are increasing alarmingly.
