The statements made by the director of the British Museum, Hartwig Fischer, who ruled out returning the Parthenon Sculptures (Elgin Marbles) to Greece in an interview to newspaper Ta Nea, has sparked criticism both in Greece and the UK.

The glass roof of the Duveen Gallery in London’s British Museum, the room where the Parthenon Sculptures are exhibited, is leaking water following heavy rainfall in the UK capital.

The oft repeated argument that the Parthenon Sculptures were not stolen, but were the gift of Sultan Selim III, to British Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, was reiterated by the descendant of Thomas Bruce, the 7th Earl of Elgin.
