The Society of Kavala Prefecture of New York (*Σύλλογος Καβαλιωτών της Νέας Υόρκης «Φίλιπποι») on Saturday afternoon, February 7, 2026, revived the customs of New Year’s Eve and the cutting of the Vasilopita at the Center for Macedonian Studies in Whitestone.
The event for the cutting of the Vasilopita of the Greek Orthodox communities of Constantinople, with the presence of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, was accompanied by a series of unforeseen events.
Vasilopita/St. Basil’s pie is one of the most recognizable and beloved customs of the New Year. It is not merely a sweet bread, but a living bearer of history, faith, and cultural continuity, bridging Antiquity, Byzantium, and modern Greece, both within and beyond its borders.
