Rural service reinstated for Greek doctors

In order for new physicians to obtain specialization they will be required to undergo rural service, immediately after graduation from medical school and not whenever they feel like it, in accordance with an amendment to be tabled next week in the House.

As stated by the Deputy Minister of Health, Leonidas Grigorakos the aim is to staff all regional health centers, since today of the 1900 centers, 800 have no doctors on staff.

Mr. Grigorakos announced that the next goal is to change the selection system for doctors to 15 days from the two years that it currently holds.
It is worth noting that so far the rural service for doctors is mandatory only on paper, as they determine when they'll do it.

So most doctors apply for inclusion in residency training and forget about their rural service. If the application is approved between their specialty, interrupt the rural service and continue after their training.

However, through this scheme doctors arrive at an age where it is not easy for them to fulfilltheir duties during their rural service, often forcing health ministers to exempt them from rural service.

The amendment excludes those who have graduated from medical schools in 2000-2001 and before. Finally, rural service will also affect who have done specialization abroad and return to Greece to work.
