Suicides abate this year

According to the Suicide Network Records of the Prevention Center of the NGO “Klimaka”, Greece has recorded a decrease in its suicidal rate, in the 1Q of 2014.

On the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day, on September 10, new information regarding suicidal rates in Greece have been presented by the NGO "Klimaka".

In the first eight months of 2013 (January to August) 229 were recorded in Greece (193 men and 36 women), while at the first eight months of 2014 the suicides decreased to 209(173 men and 36 women).

Most people who committed suicide this year are between 40 and 44 years of age.

The scientific director of the NGO “Klimaka” psychiatrist Kyriakos Katsadoros has characterized this trend as “pretty clear”, while added that the organization is not a statistical service. Further the consultative psychologist of “Klimaka” Aris Violatzis said that : ” We believe and we have seen that there is no growth in suicides. The phenomenon seems to have reached its peak and now descends.”

The 24 hour helpline 1018 has received in the first quarter of 2014 over 6,500 calls of which more than 3,600 were made by people with suicidal tendencies.
