Turkish Corvette Sent on Spy Mission

The violation of Greek territorial waters by Turkish corvette "Heybeliada" (the Turkish name for the island of Halki) coincided with an entry into the firing range in which Greek and Israeli aircraft were scheduled to train.

This caused the postponement of the final phase of exercise codenamed "ANDROMEDA 2013"for 24 hours.

As it turns out the Turkish warship would have been able to track the whole scenario of the exercise compromising tactics for both air forces.

Under the circumstances it was not possible to contin ue training until such time as runs could be rescheduled.

This is not the first time Turkish naval assets have been used to interfere with Greek – Israeli exercises.

The "Heybeliada," it should be noted is equipped with state-of-the-art sensors, including SMART-S MkII, TBT-01, X-band radar, FCS, LPI radar, ECDIS/WECDIS, GPS, LAN, and a full combat suite comprising EW radar, Laser/RF systemss, and SSTD.

It is the first ship of a class featuring stealth characteristics, built in Turkish shipyards.
