Olympic venue neglect reaches courts
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The First Instance prosecution of Athens has issued criminal suit for the neglect of Olympic venues, ten years after the Olympic Games.
The suit involves charges of dereliction of duty against the president of Olympic Properties SA, Konstantinos Matatlas, and the case will be furthered to parliament for the request to lift parliamentary immunity from the president of the public corporation and new Democracy deputy Dionysis Stamenitis, on the same charges.
This was the result of inquiries of prosecutors who were investigating criminal responsibilities for the properties, which despite having cost millions, were left to rot in neglect.
The company which was delegated to provide for the upkeep and exploitation of the venues, in fact did nothing. The accused were called in and testified as witnesses in the inquiry phase. The case was also taken up by Reuters which reported on the condition of the venues in August on the ten year anniversary of the 2014 Athens Olympics.
