Metro breaks down, passengers walk

Athens metro commuters were in for a nasty surprise on Wednesday morning, when a train stopped dead on its tracks and passengers were forced to walk along the tracks to the next station.

The train came to halt between the stations of Attiki and the station of Sepolia because of mechanical malfunction. As soon as lights went out in the cars, passengers panicked.

People had to wait for more than an hour before staff managed to open the doors and extricate them.

Passengers then used cell phones as flash lights and walked to Attiki station.
