Fugitive posed as monk on Mount Athos

A man sentenced thrice to life imprisonment, in abstentia, for a host of economic crimes committed against the public was discovered living like a hermit in cloisters and cells of Athos, hiding for the last eight years.
According to the press, he is a former municipal employee who, according to findings of auditors of Attica, when he was auditor of municipal revenue for the Daphne and Hymettus municipality, embezzled, during the period from 1995 to 2002, the amount of 9 million. euros.
The 48 year old man was convicted in absentia by the Criminal Court of Athens for the particular case for which other people were also audited.
Overall, the 48year old fugitive had 13 outstanding rulings for fraud, forgery, embezzlement, debts to the public, etc., for which he was sentenced thrice to life, plus nine years and 69 months.
As it also came out the Athens prosecutor showed that he was saught for fraud.
As it became known, he was hiding for the last 8 years on Mount Athos, where pretending to be a novice, he allegedly lived in cloisters and cells. Recently there was information about his identity and he was arrested yesterday afternoon in Karyes of Mount Athos by police.
The arrested person will be initially brought to the Misdemeanor Prosecutor of Thessaloniki.
