Syriza leader Alexis Tsipras could be the candidate for the position of president of the European Commission put forth by the European Left Party.
The post is currently held by José Manuel Barroso, and one of the three top official posts in the EU.
Tsipras' candidature is expected to be approved at a meeting of the European Left executive in Madrid on Friday, but will be formally announced at a congress in December.
According to Lisbon treaty regulations, the commission chief must secure a majority in the new European Parliament.
The socialist candidate for the post is the incumbent president of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz.
