- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
PM Antonis Samaras has announced that Stavros Dimas will be the government's nominee for new President of the Republic.
The Prime Minister called Dimas a unifying nominee for the position of head of state and said that he had come to the decision together with the Deputy Prime Minister Evangelos Venizelos.
Who is Stavros Dimas?
Stavros Dimas is a veteran politician with New Democracy and former European Commissioner for the Environment (2004-2009).
He has served in a number of ministerial positions in New Democracy governments since the 1980s and is currently the Vice President of the New Democracy party.
While a long-time New Democracy politician, he is less divisive than other potential presidential candidates from the party due to his image as a moderate center-right politician. He also enjoys broad support in Europe and was widely seen as a successful Commissioner for the Environment, promoting issues of sustainability, biodiversity, public health and combating climate change.
