Xiros was planning a hit to release jailed terrorists

A large improvised explosive device, diagrams and maps of a planned bomb attack againstthe Korydallos prison compound, anti-tank missiles and a Kalashnikov rifle fitted with a laser sight are among the early findings of a search that is being conducted by anti- terror police of the hideout rented by Chritsodoulos Xiros.

Xiros was recaptured by police, on Saturday, after having skipped furlough from prison almost exactly a year ago. He was serving six life sentences after having been convicted of participation in numerous attacks and assassinations perpetrated by terrorist group, November 17. Police seized Xiros outside a home they say he had been renting under a false identity in a secluded area of Anavissos on the south coast of Attica.

"They were preparing something very major and soon," high ranking officers of the Greek police said. Investigators are examining whether the hideout was shared with other militant groups who Xiros may have been working with.
100 kilo fertilizer bomb

A first search of the home revealed a large improvised explosive device that was almost complete. A metal oil barrel was found to contain about 100 kilos of ammonia based explosives - potentially an ANFO mix (ammonium nitrate / fuel oil). Ready detonators were discovered complete with wires which were ready to be connected to the improvised fertilizer bomb and either linked to a timer or a device to remotely detonate the bomb.

High-ranking police sources say they believe that it is likely that the powerful bomb was to be placed into a car with sacks of sand and cement to direct the blast towards the target.

Police also discovered two mysterious large cardboard boxes which were wrapped in metal ribbon and sealed with clamps. The large packages have not yet been opened, nor have notebooks been scrutinized as the evidence must first be photographed and subject to forensic analysis to lift any potential fingerprints and / or genetic material on the materials.

In the grounds of the residence an area was found concealed with tarpaulin which police believe may have been the site the guerillas were planning to rig a vehicle with the bomb.
RPG and sniper rifle

Aside from the powerful fertilizer bomb, police found a range of military grade weapons. These include an anti-tank rocket launcher, three anti-tank rockets and 8 Kalashnikovs, one of which had been fitted with a laser scope, three pistols and detonators.
