Quake rocks Athens

Services of the Attica region are on "high alert because of the densely populated area" after a weak earthquake, measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale, which occurred shortly after 8:30 am and was centered in Galatsi.

On the orders of regional governor, Rena Dourou, the Deputy Head ofthe northern sector and president of the Metropolitan civil Protection and Security Committee of the Region of Attica, George Karameros in conjunction with the Education Department of the Second Athens department, so students and teachers stayed for two hours outside classrooms and then returned to their lesson normally by following the plan laid down in these cases.

As stated in the announcement, "the Attica Region remains on alert and in close cooperation with the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (EPPO) since this type of weak earthquakes beneath the crust deserves special attention."

"The earthquake is not a concern, however, we must follow the phenomenon," said research director at the Institute of Geodynamics, Thanasis Ganasa Athina 9.84. As he said, there are small cracks in the basin which follow the general direction of the fault of Parnitha, and during the last quarter a series of small earthquakes was recorded, in the region.
