Greece gripped by the cold

A significant drop in temperature has straddled Greece on Wednesday with snow in mountains and mountainous areas in the eastern mainland and gradually also in low-lying areas. Meteorologists say it is the coldest day of this winter.
In the west few temporary clouds are expected with several hours of sunshine but in other regions of the country clouds will thicken with rain and sleet. Snow is expected mainly in the mountainous and hilly areas and for a while in the lowlands of the country.
The cities affected by the bad weather Wednesday are Volos, Lamia, Kimi, Chalkis, Livadia, Thebes, Attica, Corinth, Nemea, Andros, Tinos, Naxos, Chania, Heraklion, Rethymnon and later the Dodecanese.
The winds will blow from northern directions 4-6 Beaufort, in the east but in the Aegean will reach 7, and locally 8 Beaufort. The temperature will fall further in northern Greece to -6 to 3 degrees Celsius, and -4 to 4 degrees in the east and up to 9 degrees in western Greece and Crete, while in the Cyclades and the Dodecanese it will range from 2-12 degrees Celsius.
In Attica sleet and a little snow is expected mainly in the east and northeast parts of the county. The winds will blow from the north 5-6 Beaufort, and up to 7 Beaufort. Temperatures will range from -2 to 4 degrees Celsius.
In Thessaloniki clouds and long periods of sunshine are expected, with little sleet and snow in the surrounding mountains. The winds will blow easterly 3-5 Beaufort and the temperature will range from -3 to 3 degrees Celsius.
