Athens is now at the focus of the ongoing NSA eavesdropping saga, as German weekly "Der Spiegel" names the US Embassy in Athens as one of the covert eavesdropping centers.
The information was gleamed from an NSA document presented by the magazine , according to which special information collection units under the name Special Collection Service, staffed by US intelligence personnel, and working in 80 countries globally, of which 19 in Europe (according to another article in Greek daily "Ta Nea").
According to the document in Spiegel, the Athens branch also sports equipment that can be remotely operated, apart from services staffed by the SCS. What is noteworthy is that such centers purportedly operate only in Athens, Moscow, and Vienna.
The article mentions that such operations are carried out under the utmost secrecy, and monitoring antennae are often hidden by paneling to disguise their appearance, often on top of buildings.
