Schaeuble: Varoufakis is foolishly naive

Yanis Varoufakis has been insisting that German FinMin Wolfgang Schaeuble has never meted harsh words at him during their meetings, but the latter in a way refutes this.

Based on Varoufakis’ comments at a press conference following yesterday’s Eurogroup, Herr Schaeuble may have not verbally ‘assailed’ Varoufakis over the draft bills tabled in Greece’s Parliament on combating the “humanitarian crisis” in Greece, nevertheless, he seems to have spoken in a non-flattering, even somewhat sarcastic tone of Varoufakis, in statements to German reporters.

Schaeuble blamed the Greek minister on the “foolishly naive way” with which “he treats the media”. According to Schaeuble, Varoufakis is “looking for enemies”.

The German FinMin’s statements came after Varoufakis’ controversial interview with Corriere della Sera, during which the Italian newspaper interpreted the Greek FinMin’s statements as including the prospect of a “referendum for the Euro”, resulting in a back and forth between Athens and the Italian daily.

The German FinMin revealed that the “foolishly naive” phrase was conveyed directly to the Greek FinMin, during a discussion they had within the framework of the Eurogroup meeting.
