Giannis Smaragdis on the El Greco exhibition
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The famous director Giannis Smaragdis, himself a Cretan, wrote a letter, expressing his protest for the depreciation of the “El Greco” exhibition, in Bethlehem Gate in Heraklion.
Mr. Smaragdis mentions that, “if the Mayor of Heraklion, Mr. Vassilios Lambrinos wants to keep the exhibition open… it will remain open”.
The movie “El Greco” (2007) by Giannis Smaragdis is among the top-10 Greek movies for the Internet Movie Data Base.
Mr. Smaragdis gave a large number of objects -used in the movie- to the Municipality of Heraklion, in order to have an exhibition for Dominikos Theotokopoulos, just like in Toledo.
This could be the first step for a museum in Heraklion, dedicated to the world famous Cretan painter.
In his letter, Mr. Smaragdis also reminds that “some Municipal Authority of the past, “demolished” Nikos Kazantzakis’s house in Heraklion. That’s what we are in Greece. We forget and destroy our history and culture”.
