EU Parliament Chief: Accountability for Troika
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The European Parliament's initiative to enforce oversight over the troika, fist in the finance committee and then the plenum to offer explanations on the Greek program, was relayed by parliament president Martin Schulz to government vice president Evangelos Venizelos.
"It' not acceptable that the troika, having been established according to law, is not accountable to any authority," was the relevant statement made by Mr. Schulz.
Mr. Venizelos, hailing his "dear friend and comrade Martin Schulz," noted the changes that will be wrought in Europe after the elections for European parliament and the change in leadership, stressing the need for a "new Europe" that will face such intense problems as unemployment.
"Today, our country is a step from exiting the crisis. We all know how difficult this step is, and that it's a one way street, and that there is no plan B," said Mr. Venizelos, who also lauded Mr. Schulz for his efforts to bring investments to Greece.
Martin Schulz, who is a candidate, again, for the president of the European Parliament, noted that he will deploy an "exclusively European pre-election campaign" with an emphasis on re-instating the trust of Europeans in the EU. In this vein, the president of the EU parliament noted his resolve to pursue accountability for the troika.
